An artile about the study of the I Ching
Hello to everyone. I would like to introduce our self to the study of the I Ching and to it's Ideas and principles, as I have studied them trough my own experience and with the teachings of Juan Li, one of the oldest students of master Mantak Chia, and now a master on it's own. The I Ching or "book of changes" is one of the older books in the world. It was first written around 1000-750 BC as a book of divination but the tradition of the divination itself may go further in the past. The history of the I Ching and the philosophy written about it are really interesting but these will not be the topics of my writings. Better scholars have written about it. If you do not know anything about the book, you could start with wikipedia .
About the concept of divination in general. The idea undergoing this concept is that all the world, visible, invisible , past present and future, is interconnected, and so if you look at ANY event around you you will be able to see in it the connections between this event and all the rest of the world, "drawing" in this way the shape of the event you wanted to know about. Nothing in theory so amazing about but I would like to bring your attention on two things. First the amount of information to be inferred is enormous, practically impossible to manage. Second is not said that an event brings to one and only one outcome, and that this outcome could be predicted. Modern science, Physics and the study of complex systems says it is NOT possible (ever heard about the butterfly effect?)
And here I can introduce how beautiful is the I Ching, and how wise were the people that thought about it. The I Ching is not meant to answer to yes and no questions and to questions like "what will happen in the future, in this time or minute?". Any question posed in this way is an incorrect question and will receive either no answer or an answer that points on which is the right way to ask. The I Ching implies that the outcome you will see DEPENDS ON YOUR QUESTION: the way you pose it and what you want to know. , We can start to see that this is much more than a book we use to know "what will it be", the common modern time understanding of the term "divination". At the contrary, one of the first things the I Ching teach us is that there is no future in which we do not participate in its creation. It teach us that we are part of this Universe, as everything else, and that, willingly or not, we contribute to it. The I Ching answer to us using the frame and the cosmology used by ancient Taoist, and in doing so teaches us to think and reason in that terms, and helping us to see the world trough that wisdom. As a final things: the I Ching give us answers as an image of the flow of energy originated by our question and actions, and from the initial situation. If you get an answer from the I Ching that implies "this will happen (for sure)" check if in your question you remember to ask in a way that implies suggestions about the actions you can do to change a situation. For example if you, concerned about the fact you do not know how to sky, and planning to go skying ask: "will I have an accident?" and in your answer appear the sign for "great danger, better to stop" , you may interpret this and say:"I will for sure have an accident, so I will not go skying". However, if you only had asked " I'm am concerned about the fact that I'm planning to sky but I do not know how to, how can I avoid an accident?" you may receive a great variety of answers: from how to learn how to sky, to how is important not to be blocked by fears to "great danger".
The first way to pose your question implies: "I will go on the snow, put on a pair of sky that I have never learned how to use, and go". I think you will agree that you do not need divination to understand the potential danger of this situation. The second question instead implies " I really would like to go skying but I would not like to have accidents; what is the best thing to do?" And the I Ching will answer you and help you in taking the right course of actions, that MAY include "do not go, you are not ready. (or there are other dangers you are not aware of).
Why the I Chng is so "picky" in the way you ask questions? Between other things, this is a great way to teach us about how to look at situations and help us to realize how deeply us are part of the working of this wonderful Universe and the wisdom of it.
In other postings I will speak more about how to ask and how the I Ching answer to us.

How to consult and read the I Ching.
The first method to see the signs in nature that lead us to the interpretations of the energies in the moment was to take a turtle shell, put it into the fire and then interpreter the cracks on the turtle shell. Due to the interconnection of everything as said in the previous writing, this helped to read the signs of the Universe and the situation related to the question. This method changed in time and evolved. The I Ching as it is now present a series of 64 symbols, each one of them formed by 6 lines on top of each other and each line can be integer or broken in the middle. The lines have an order from down to top, so the first line will be the lower one. A broken line is a Yin line and a integer line will be a Yang line.
Each hexagram, the series of 6 lines, is composed by two Trigrams, a series of 3 lines. There are then (if you want you can do the calculation) 8 possible different Trigrams. Each one of them is associate to a particular force in the Universe to a direction of energy and to many other things. Is from the interpretation of these forces that the I Ching can help us.
Here a video about understanding interpretations and the five elements in the Taoist tradition. In another video and writing I will connect it with the interpretation of the 8 Trigrams in the I Ching.
Enjoy!
